Fully Embrace Your Identity 2 | Slave or Son?

Last week we said that there’s a war going on in the SPIRIT realm about your identity in Christ. And that we must see ourselves the way God sees us—as the masterpieces that we are!

Today, our thought will come from …

John 1:9-12 ESV

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…

We want to focus on verse 12. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…

The Mirror Bible says it like this:

“Everyone who realizes their association in Him, convinced that He is their original life and that His name defines them, God gives the assurance that they are indeed His offspring, begotten of Him; He sanctions the legitimacy of their sonship.”

So, what is sonship? When look up this word in the Bible dictionary, it’ll point you to the word adoption.

Adoption is the act of leaving one’s natural family and entering into the privileges and responsibilities of another.

When God, as our Father, graciously adopted us as believers in Christ into his spiritual family, He granted us all of the privileges of heirship.

In other words, God is telling us we are now HIS OFFSPRING with all of the privileges thereof.

Understand that Jesus’ Name defines us. It defines who we are, what we have access to, what are privileges are, and what we can do.

Here’s the challenge though: Many of us are still wandering in the wilderness thinking like slaves rather than sons.

Now, please don’t be offended. Hear me out for a moment. Proverbs 11:9b KJ21 says, through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

Here’s what we need to know. Many believers are still bound by the chains of spiritual slavery. And the trick of the enemy is to have us BOUND UP, yet all the while believing that we’re FREE.

Here are just a few checkpoints to let you know if you may have a spirit of slavery versus living in full sonship with Christ.

1. What’s the source of your IDENTITY? As a SLAVE, it’s your performance. Have a done enough? Do I have enough? Am I enough?

If you’re operating from SONSHIP, you recognize that you are SON or DAUGHTER of the King.

2. What’s your sense of belonging? A SLAVE always feels like an orphan. They never feel like they belong—even in some churches.

A SON has come into the knowledge that they are accepted in the beloved because they are part of the family of God.

3. What is your spirit operating from? Is it a root of REJECTION OR ADOPTION?

SLAVES feel rejected and think they have to prove themselves—trying to earn approval, whereas, SONS have received the spirit of adoption. Nothing to prove this is simply who we are—favored and blessed.

People of God, God desires that we would walk in the fullness of who we TRULY are which is more than many of us have become up to this point.

LISTEN Gal 4:6-7 NKJV, says,

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

You can’t earn it. Trust Him and believe. Then ask God to teach you how to RECEIVE IT.

So, this week, pray and ask God if you’re fully walking in sonship. If not, ask Him to reveal anything that in you that needs to be dealt with and have faith that He will do it—you do your part too.

Fully walking in sonship. Now, that’s the point of purpose…see you next time for part 3.
